What a Category-Based Round Is

Express Entry manages three round types: general, program-specific, and category-based rounds.

In a category-based round, the Minister sets a category to meet an economic goal. Only candidates who meet that category and qualify for one of the three Express Entry programs receive invitations.

Who the Transport Occupations Category Is For

This category invites candidates with recent work experience in transport-sector occupations. The occupations must match the list defined by the Minister.

The exact criteria are set out in the Ministerial Instructions for the category.

Why Only 150 Invitations Were Issued

Category-based rounds target a narrow pool. Invitation numbers are usually much smaller than in general or program-specific rounds.

For comparison, the previous Transport round on August 7, 2026 issued 300 invitations at a cut-off of 470. This round issued half as many invitations (150) at a cut-off 7 points higher (477).

What the Tie-Breaking Rule Means

If more than one candidate has the lowest CRS score of 477, the cut-off applies by profile submission date and time.

Anyone at 477 who submitted before June 4, 2026 at 21:48:22 UTC was invited. Those who submitted after were not. That timestamp is nearly five months before the draw.

What Happens Next for Invited Candidates

The 150 invited candidates now hold an Invitation to Apply (ITA).

These candidates have a limited window to submit a complete permanent residence application to the government.

What This Data Tells Us

One hundred fifty invitations is the smallest trades or transport round of the year, and the size explains everything else. IRCC was topping up a narrow category rather than opening it.

Set against the October 1 trades round, the contrast is sharp. That round issued 3,500 invitations at 476 and this one issued 150 at 477, which shows how differently IRCC treats transport from the broader trades category even at nearly identical cut-offs.

The seven-point rise from the August transport round came with half the invitations. A shallower draw stops higher in the pool, so the movement reflects round size rather than a more competitive field.

The tie-breaking timestamp of June 4, 2026 points to a crowded band. Candidates at exactly 477 needed a profile almost five months old, which means the pool at that score is clearing slowly.

For anyone in a transport occupation, the lesson from a 150-invitation round is that eligibility matters more than timing. Confirming your NOC code appears on the Minister’s current list is what decides whether a round this small can reach you at all.
